Guide for families applying to independent schools in NYC and New Jersey

ISEE vs. SSAT: which test for NYC and NJ private school admissions?

By the Tutor Tables team · Updated · 3 min read

Quick answer

Both the ISEE and the SSAT are admissions tests for independent (private) schools, and many schools accept either. The ISEE has four levels (Primary, Lower, Middle, Upper). Its sections are Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Math Achievement and an essay. Students may take it once per testing season, up to three times a year. The SSAT has three levels (Elementary, Middle, Upper). It scores verbal, quantitative and reading, plus an unscored writing sample. Check each school's admissions page to see which test it accepts.

How to choose

  1. List your target schools and check what each one accepts.
  2. Take a practice test of each if both are accepted. Some students do better on the ISEE's two-part math. Others prefer the SSAT's structure.
  3. Plan for a second attempt. With the ISEE, a fall test leaves room for a winter retake.

A good prep plan

  • Start with a diagnostic under timed conditions.
  • Build vocabulary and reading stamina steadily. Neither can be crammed.
  • Practice quantitative reasoning, the logic-style math that school curricula don't always cover.
  • Rehearse the essay with a simple structure.
  • Do a timed run-through and a calm-down routine before test day.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can my child take the ISEE?

Once per testing season, up to three times per school year. The seasons are Fall (August–November), Winter (December–March), and Spring/Summer (April–July).

How many times can my child take the SSAT?

It depends on the level and format. Middle and Upper Level paper tests can be taken up to six times per testing year (Aug 1 to Jul 31), with once-a-year limits for the at-home and Prometric formats. Check admission.org for current limits.

Which test should we choose?

Start with the schools on your list. If they accept both, take a practice test of each and choose the one where your child performs more comfortably.

When should we start preparing?

Ideally 8–12 weeks before the first test date, so there's time for a second attempt in the next season if needed.
