Digital SAT 2026–27: test dates, format, and a 10-week prep plan

By the Tutor Tables team · Updated · 3 min read

Quick answer

The digital SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes long, with 98 questions in two sections: Reading & Writing, and Math. Each section has two adaptive modules, and a built-in Desmos calculator is allowed for all of Math. Scores range from 400 to 1600. The remaining 2026–27 US test dates are Nov 7 and Dec 5, 2026, and Mar 6, May 1 and Jun 5, 2027. A focused 10-week plan starts with a full practice test in Bluebook. It then targets the weakest question types and ends with two more timed practice tests.

The format in one table

SectionQuestionsTimeNotes
Reading & Writing5464 min (2 modules × 32)Short passages, one question each
Math4470 min (2 modules × 35)Calculator allowed throughout (Desmos built in)
Total982 hr 14 min + 10-min breakScore 400–1600 (each section 200–800)

Adaptive by section. How you do on the first module of each section decides whether the second module is harder or easier. Accuracy on Module 1 matters a lot: careless errors early can cap your score range.

Who requires scores (fall 2027 entry)

As of September 2026, the following colleges require SAT or ACT scores:

  • Harvard
  • Yale
  • Brown
  • Dartmouth
  • Penn
  • Cornell
  • MIT
  • Stanford

Princeton and Columbia are still test-optional for fall 2027 entry. Both will require scores starting with fall 2028 entry.

Many other colleges remain test-optional, so check each school's own admissions page.

A 10-week plan

Weeks 1–2: Baseline

  • Take a full, timed Bluebook practice test.
  • Sort every missed question by type (for example "transitions," "linear equations," "inference") and by cause (didn't know it, misread it, or ran out of time).

Weeks 3–7: Targeted skill work

  • Spend three short sessions a week on the three weakest question types.
  • Learn the Desmos calculator well. It can check or solve many algebra and graphing questions quickly.
  • Take a timed module every week to build pacing.

Week 8: Second full practice test

  • Re-sort your errors. Drop question types you've mastered and add new weak spots.

Weeks 9–10: Test conditions

  • Take one more full test at the same time of day as the real exam.
  • Review error patterns, not just scores.
  • In the last three days, sleep, keep review light, and plan the logistics.

Don't ignore test anxiety

Knowing the material isn't always enough. Research shows two simple routines can help anxious test-takers:

  • Writing about your worries for ten minutes before an exam (Ramirez & Beilock, Science, 2011)
  • Reframing nerves as energy (Jamieson et al., 2010, with GRE takers)

We build both into prep sessions.

How Tutor Tables helps

Our Whole-Learner Tutoring & Test Prep program works in four steps:

  1. A diagnostic practice test.
  2. A week-by-week plan timed to your test date, in 10–20 hour packages.
  3. Check-ins after every practice test.
  4. Test-anxiety strategies from Pause–Regulate–Plan–Practice.

We work in person in Lodi, NJ and Manhattan, and online. One of our SAT students raised his score by over 100 points.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the digital SAT?

2 hours 14 minutes of testing: Reading & Writing (54 questions, 64 minutes) and Math (44 questions, 70 minutes), with a 10-minute break between sections.

Can I use a calculator?

Yes, on the entire Math section. The Bluebook app includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator, and you may also bring an approved calculator. Calculators aren't allowed on Reading & Writing.

Which colleges require the SAT or ACT for fall 2027 entry?

As of September 2026, Harvard, Yale, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, Cornell, MIT, and Stanford require scores. Princeton and Columbia remain test-optional for fall 2027 entry but will require scores starting with fall 2028 entry. Always check each college's admissions page.
