Guide for parents comparing tutoring options

Learning center, private tutor, or AI tutor? How to choose in 2026

By the Tutor Tables team · Updated · 3 min read

Quick answer

Choose based on what your child needs. AI tools such as Khanmigo ($4/month) and ChatGPT Study Mode are good for practice and quick explanations, but they don't hold a child accountable or diagnose gaps. Marketplace tutors are affordable and flexible, but quality varies. Franchise centers offer structure and a set curriculum. An independent practice with trained educators is best when a child is struggling, anxious or learns differently. It diagnoses the real gap, writes a plan and reports progress.

What the research says

  • A J-PAL review of 96 randomized evaluations found tutoring works best with:
    • at least three sessions a week
    • consistent, trained tutors
    • one-on-one or small-group sessions
  • A 2020 NBER meta-analysis found teachers and paraprofessionals outperformed volunteers and parents as tutors.

The research on AI tutors is still emerging. The strongest existing evidence is for human tutoring.

Which fits your child?

  • On track, needs practice or quick help: an AI tool or a marketplace tutor is often enough.
  • Likes structure, needs steady drill: a learning center can work.
  • Behind and not improving, anxious, or has an IEP or 504 plan: choose an educator who diagnoses first, writes a plan, and reports progress in writing.
  • High-stakes test coming (SAT, SHSAT, ISEE): choose a tutor with a diagnostic practice test and a dated plan.

Using AI well

AI tools aren't the enemy. Used well, they give children extra practice between sessions.

The risk is that a child gets answers without learning. A good tutor can teach your child to use AI tools as a coach, not an answer key, and then check that the learning sticks.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI tutor replace a human tutor?

For practice and on-demand explanations, AI tools can help. For a child who is behind, anxious, or learns differently, a trained human educator adds diagnosis, accountability, motivation, and communication with the family and school.

Is a learning center or a private tutor better?

Centers offer structure and a set curriculum, which suits some children. A private tutor or independent practice can tailor the plan to one child, which matters most when the gap is specific or the child has a learning difference.

What does research say works?

Tutoring by trained teachers or paraprofessionals, in one-on-one or small groups, several times a week, produces the strongest results in randomized studies.

Can we combine options?

Yes. Many families pair a human tutor with an AI tool for between-session practice. A good tutor can show your child how to use AI tools productively.
